School Food Waste

Food is one of the primary streams of waste in any nursery, school or other educational facility.

To manage this, we can install simple school food waste bins to make it easy to segregate at source. With collections 7 days a week in most areas we can pick up your waste as often as needed to maintain sanitation.

We can even provide food waste management education for your staff and students.

Fresh Start is also partnered with The Trussell Trust to end food poverty and with Too Good To Go, the world’s largest surplus food app.

Recycling In Schools

We are focussed on delivering top-class waste collections and recycling that will make a positive impact in schools, communities and the wider world.

We will seamlessly integrate easy-to-use recycling bins into school cafeterias, classrooms and refuse areas. Both staff and students can segregate their waste efficiently.

Once collected, we send all waste to our materials recovery centre where it is processed for reuse or recycling. For schools, colleges and universities, this results in total compliance with Simpler Recycling laws and demonstrates a commitment to a greener future.

School Recycling Bins

Including standard wheelie bins or larger Eurobins, our containers come in different colours so it’s easy to identify which waste stream goes where.

Manage large amounts of waste with FEL skips. The secure lid keeps waste safe from bad weather and vermin to keep school sites clean.

For one off projects, renovations or clearances, we have a choice of commercial skips available for use in the education sector.

Waste Reduction for Schools

We aim to embed waste reduction and recycling for schools in the North West, and for students of all ages.

Considering which items could be reused, refilled, or are not necessary to be purchased in the first place is one of the key lessons we teach as part of our waste management education.

We have developed resources to assist the innovators of tomorrow to make informed and environmentally sustainable choices about waste production and recycling for schools, colleges and universities.

Beyond the Classroom

As well as championing waste education, Fresh Start is dedicated to giving back to the communities we operate in and supporting children beyond the classroom.

We have donated £1000 to Liverpool-based charity KIND (Kids in Need and Distress). This contribution enabled six children from disadvantaged backgrounds to attend KIND’s summer activity camp for a week during the summer holidays, where they could take part in fun, educational and enriching activities.

How Often Should School Waste be Collected?

bullet

School waste can be collected as little or as often as needed. At Fresh Start we service cities and towns all over the North West with a choice of collection frequencies. We will discuss the amounts of waste you produce and then develop a personalised school waste management plan that includes the right amount of deliveries to keep your site clean and sanitary.

How Can We Encourage Recycling in Schools?

bullet

Including a waste education programme in the curriculum can help to teach children about the importance of recycling in schools. This can include running competitions, hosting awareness events and encouraging children to engage in recycling campaigns. Staff can also contribute by using recycling bins and modelling this behaviour to children. As a school waste collection provider, we deliver colour-coded bins for simple recycling and can arrange educational activities that teach the whole school community about reducing waste and recycling where possible.

How Can Schools Manage Hazardous Waste?

bullet

All schools will have some amount of hazardous waste. This includes paint and oils from art or technology lessons, biomedical waste from biology or chemical lessons and WEEE waste such as computers and batteries. A licensed waste carrier like Fresh Start can arrange school waste disposal and proper containers for hazardous items to ensure they are removed and handled safely.

How Can We Reduce School Waste?

bullet

There are lots of simple ways to reduce school waste, such as:

  • Going paperless and sending all communications via email or app
  • Avoiding single use items like paper plates or plastic cutlery
  • Repurposing empty food containers for art or science projects
  • Using refillable options for cleaning supplies
  • Collecting food scraps for compost
  • Installing recycling bins in schools to make waste segregation quick and easy

These are just some ideas for reducing school waste. Small changes can all make a big difference to the environment. Reducing school waste also contributes to lower waste management costs for educational establishments.
