The Lowry Hotel, one of Manchester’s most iconic luxury hotels, has partnered with Fresh Start Waste Services to transform its waste management processes, improve recycling performance, and ensure full compliance ahead of the forthcoming 2025 legislation requiring businesses to segregate recyclable materials.
The partnership follows concerns raised by the hotel around inaccurate reporting from their previous waste provider. Despite having a compactor, food bins, glass bins, and a cardboard baler on site, the reporting they received did not reflect actual usage or weight patterns. After initial meetings and a full waste review, Fresh Start Waste identified several inefficiencies-most notably that almost all waste streams were being placed into a single Porta-Packer, limiting recycling opportunities and leading to unnecessary costs.
Fresh Start Waste worked closely with the hotel’s leadership team to “unpack the packer,” replacing the compactor with clearly streamed 1100L bins for General Waste, Mixed Recycling, Glass, and Food Waste. With segregated daily and weekly collections in place—supported by Fresh Start’s seven-day city centre operation—The Lowry Hotel now benefits from:

- Lower costs through the removal of leased equipment

- Full preparation for 2025 waste segregation legislation
Fresh Start also delivered in-depth waste education sessions with all departments within the hotel, ensuring staff understood what goes into each stream, the importance of correct segregation, and how their efforts support wider environmental goals.

Since the partnership began in August 2025, The Lowry Hotel has achieved instant improvements in recycling, reduced costs, and eliminated service issues. The hotel now receives reliable, meaningful data through Fresh Start’s monthly reporting-allowing teams to celebrate progress and maintain momentum.
To mark the beginning of this collaboration with one of Manchester’s leading hotels, Fresh Start Waste Services has made a £500 donation to Hospitality Action, their nominated charity supporting individuals across the hospitality sector.
