Fresh Start Waste have provided waste and recycling services at this iconic Manchester building since it relaunched in 2015.
Following a £30m redevelopment, Grade II Listed, iconic Manchester building, The Corn Exchange, is now home to 14 restaurants including Gino D’Acampos, Alston Bar & Beef, Cosy Club, Wahaca, Zizzi and also houses a prestigious 114 room hotel.
The initial free audit conducted by Fresh Start Waste showed that waste facilities were all all shared, with the bin storage being in the basement.
This in itself meant the only access was via one of two service lifts. Commitment to a sustainable waste management solution meant collections of segregated card, glass, food and general waste were required.

Time constraints for this City Centre building meant daily access between 5.30am and 7.00am only to avoid congestion of the delivery area. The successful waste collector needed to provide a comprehensive waste strategy to solve operational challenges, including suggestions to allow the data for billing of individual tenants separately.
In conjunction with the property management teams and tenants, two waste-flow strategies were developed; one for the centre as a whole, and one for each of the tenants.
Both strategies were rolled out comprehensively prior to launch. Tenant handbooks were produced, providing guidance on how waste was to be segregated internally, what happens when it is brought to the bin storage, and the process and schedule for bringing bin containers outside ready for their daily collection.
This results in a positive impact to the environment and reduced carbon impact. Since 2015, the complex has achieved not only the minimum requirement of ‘zero to landfill’, but also consistently high recycling rates.
