Why You Need Safe Paint Disposal

Proper paint disposal is crucial for protecting our environment and our own health. Many paints contain harmful chemicals or heavy metals, including oil-based, latex, and solvent-based paints. If safe paint disposal practices are not followed, it can lead to environmental contamination and pose risks to human health.

Improper disposal of hazardous waste, including leftover paint, is illegal. Businesses must comply with local laws that require a hazardous waste consignment note for disposal.

Finally, when you use a licensed carrier for old paint and old paint tin disposal, you reduce the impact on landfill sites and prevent unnecessary landfill waste.

How Do We Recycle Paint and Paint Tins?

Once you contact us about your old paint disposal, we’ll provide an initial quote for your exact needs.

From there, we arrange a convenient collection where we’ll pick up paint and old paint tins from your premises.

We separate paint according to type, and then arrange for leftover paint to be filtered and treated.

Old paint tins are cleaned to remove any paint residue, then crushed and sent to metal processors for recycling.

Recycled paint is repackaged and can go on to be new paint. Plastic and  metal paint tins can be turned into new tins or other items.

Any hazardous or unusable materials are disposed of responsibly.

What Do We Do With Recycled Paint and Paint Tins?

At Fresh Start, we believe in turning waste into opportunity, and do our best to recycle 100% of the waste we collect. Here’s what happens when you recycle old paint and old paint tins with us.

Paint Recycling

  • Reprocessed Paint – Leftover paint can be mixed and filtered, with additives and colourants added as necessary. It can then be resold as reprocessed paint, which is often used for projects where high-end finishes aren’t required.
  • Raw materials – Pigments and binders can be extracted and used in new paint products.
  • Alternative uses – Some recycled paint is used on graffiti removal, as primer coats, or even turned into materials used for cement

Paint Tins Recycling

  • Metal recovery – Recycled paint tins are primarily made of metal, which can be melted down and repurposed into new metal products.
  • Upcycling – Fresh Start encourages businesses and local schemes to use old paint pots and tins for creative uses, such as flower pots or art projects.

PAINT DISPOSAL FAQs

How Do I Prepare Paint for Disposal?

bullet

To prepare paint for disposal, start by checking if the paint is oil-based or water-based, as disposal methods differ. For small amounts of leftover paint, mix it with sawdust or paint hardener until it’s solidified. Once hardened, it is safe to dispose of in a waste recycling centre.

For large quantities, Fresh Start can support you with safe and efficient paint recycling, and on-off or regular collections. Always ensure that paints are sealed in their original paint cans to avoid spills during transportation.

Is Paint Hazardous Waste?

bullet

Not all paints are considered hazardous waste, but many, including oil-based paints, contain heavy metals and other chemicals that could be harmful to human health and contribute to environmental contamination.

Solvent-based paints are classified as hazardous and must be managed carefully. Water-based paints are less hazardous, but still require proper disposal. It’s crucial to use a hazardous waste consignment note when disposing of paints from commercial sources to comply with regulations.

Can Empty Paint Tins Go In the General Waste Bin?

bullet

Empty paint tins are often made of metal and shouldn’t be put into the general waste bin. If your paint tins are completely free of liquid paint and residue, which you ensure by cleaning and scraping them, they can typically be recycled as metal. By recycling, you prevent environmental contamination and contribute to sustainability efforts and environmental targets.

What Happens to Recycled Paint?

bullet

Once collected, recycled paint can go on to be a number of other things. Leftover paint often goes through a process of mixing and filtering to become reprocessed paint, which is ideal for projects that don’t require a flawless finish. Some paints are broken down into their raw materials, such as pigments, and are then reused to create entirely new products. Recycled paint can also be used for more unusual purposes, such as graffiti remover or primer.
