A fresh appearance at this year’s St Patrick’s day parade
Fresh Start were honoured to take part in Manchester’s annual St Patrick’s Day Parade for the first time this year, with one of our latest state-of-the-art waste wagons joining the party while decked out in the green, white and orange of the Irish tricolour.
Around 1 in 5 people in the UK are able to trace their ancestry to Ireland, and with an even higher proportion in the North West, it’s no surprise that the Manchester Irish Festival is one of the highlights of the calendar in the region.
Celebrating its 22nd year, the festivities were topped by the Parade, with tens of thousands of people from the Irish diaspora packing the streets of the city centre to cheer on the lively procession of floats, musicians and dancers, who had flocked to Manchester from all around the world.
Passing by dozens of businesses serviced by Fresh Start’s waste and recycling collection wagons along the route, the carnival atmosphere reached fever pitch in Albert Square, the focal point for the 17 days of the Festival, where thousands more squeezed in to join the revelry.
Even the Town Hall got in on the act by being bathed in green light during the evening!
With the Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill, and associations with everyone from George Best to Steve Coogan and Oasis, Manchester is a city which is hugely proud of its links to Ireland.
Likewise, we’re delighted to now have a total of nine pod wagons in Irish colours – all equipped with Euro 6 engines, the new driving force in green emissions – working hard to pick up refuse all over the North West.
We collect general waste and all recyclables in Manchester twice per day, seven days a week. Indeed, on St. Patrick’s Day itself we emptied around 4,000 bins, while the food waste gathered by our wagons adds up to a staggering 7,000 tonnes each year.
The organisers of the Manchester Irish Festival have hailed 2017’s edition as another record-breaking year, and after having our first taste of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade we can’t wait for next year’s event.
