The challenge

The event takes place at Cathedral Gardens Hub and across the City of Manchester between 22nd September and 2nd October. An exciting and influential event, it brings together Manchester’s diverse range of food and drink venues, experts and traders. It’s a celebration of the very best in hospitality that the City has to offer.

Before the event the Fresh Start Waste commercial team worked closely with Alexa Stratton-Powell, Festival Director to understand the best set up for festival waste collections and recycling. Obviously, glass was a major recyclate which would be produced. As such, glass bins were located around the Manchester food and drink festival in addition to the general waste bis of various sizes. The glass was 100% recycled.

“Throughout the event Fresh Start kept a close eye on how full and heavy bins were getting in order to advise when they needed and didn’t need to collect the bins for emptying. This not only kept the cost down but reduced the environmental impact of additional truck movements where not needed.

Using Fresh Start Waste for the event’s festival waste meant that in terms of sustainability, the event organisers can rest assured that the vehicle emissions were 100% balanced through Fresh Start’s carbon offsetting programme which sees trees planted in the UK via Forest Carbon.”

The results

Together, [Your Company Name] and Fresh Start developed a program for the event. This program included deliveries and collections of containers for both general waste and recyclables.

Sorting and Processing

The collected materials were transported to Fresh Start’s advanced materials recovery facility in Swinton for sorting. Recyclable materials were separated for recycling, while residual waste was diverted to a nearby energy-from-waste facility in the North West. This process generated green energy and ensured zero waste went to landfill.

Bin Deliveries

To ensure smooth waste management during the event, we pre-planned the delivery of bins based on access times and expected waste volume. This included 10 x 240L glass bins, 6 x 1100L general waste bins, and an additional 10 x 240L general waste bins.
