Manchester Food and Drink Festival celebrated it’s 25-year anniversary this year and has become a staple in the diaries of many food and drink connoisseurs and lovers alike.
Taking place at Cathedral Gardens Hub and across the City of Manchester between 22nd September and 2nd October, the exciting and influential event brings together Manchester’s diverse range of food and drink venues, experts and traders in a celebration of the very best in hospitality that the City has to offer.
Before the event of the event the Fresh Start Waste commercial team worked closely with Alexa Stratton-Powell, Festival Director to understand the best set up for waste collections and recycling. Obviously, glass was a major recyclate which would be produced so glass bins were located around the Manchester food and drink festival in addition to the general waste bis of various sizes. The glass was 100% recycled.
“Throughout the event Fresh Start kept a close eye on how full and heavy bins were getting in order to advise when they needed and didn’t need to collect the bins for emptying, which not only kept the cost down, but reduced the environmental impact of additional truck movements where not needed.
Using Fresh Start Waste for the event’s waste meant that in terms of sustainability, the event organisers can rest assured that the vehicle emissions were 100% balanced through Fresh Start’s carbon offsetting programme, which sees trees planted in the UK via Forest Carbon.”
In partnership they developed a programme of container deliveries and collections for general waste as well which would then be taken for sorting at Fresh Start’s state of the art materials recovery facility in Swinton. With recyclable materials being removed for recycling, and residual waste making its way to a North West based energy from waste facility to generate green energy, with zero waste going to landfill.
Delivery of 10 x 240l glass bins, 6 x1100l and 10 x 240l general waste bins was pre-planned to suit the event and access times. Fresh Start delivered all bins prior to the first day and collected the containers at the end of the event.
