A special delivery to Francis House

Members of the Fresh Start Team made their annual trip to local charity Francis House Children’s Hospice to deliver a selection of Christmas gifts.

Having supported the charity for a number of years, Christmas gives Fresh Start the opportunity to spread a little freshtive cheer to children at the hospice.

The Didsbury based children’s hospice is a remarkable charity providing professional care, support and friendship to families whose children have been diagnosed with life threatening or life-limiting conditions.

Everyone at Fresh Start gets involved every year; donating Christmas goodies for children who thoroughly deserve them.

Fresh Start’s Director Nicola McGrath commented; ‘Francis House is a worthwhile and dedicated charity that we are proud to support. Our Christmas present donations will hopefully bring some cheer to children at Francis House at an often difficult time of year.

The donations from the Fresh team were delivered to the children at Francis House just in time for Christmas. Nicola added, ‘as a local business, it is a privilege to be involved with Francis House and we are looking forward to continuing our support with them in 2012’.

Manchester chefs revolutionise food recycling

Manchester’s top restaurants are backing our new scheme to push recycling leftover food waste, by assisting us launch our Green Chef initiative.

With 7 million tonnes of food being wasted every year in the UK, the new scheme has been created to revolutionise food recycling within Manchester.

By recycling 100% of all food waste that we receive, The Green Chef scheme reduces a business’s carbon footprint and also diverts food waste from landfill. Instead of the waste food being sent to landfill it is then processed to make compost.

Amongst supporters of the scheme is nationally acclaimed restaurant The Mark Addy. Executive Head Chef Robert Owen Brown commented that, ‘The Green Chef’ supports The Mark Addy’s ethos of using local suppliers and reducing environmental damage wherever possible. Robert continued, “I’m glad there is finally a specialist service for recycling food.”

By providing kitchens with compact, convenient indoor food waste caddies and compostable bio bag liners the service is made simple and easy, so that food waste can be emptied quickly and cleanly into large outdoor food bins.

Amongst other established restaurants signing up to the scheme include, Manchester’s longest established quality Turkish restaurant Café Istanbul and Cheshire Life’s Food and Drink Awards ‘Manchester Restaurant of the Year 2011’ Rosso.

Fresh Start Director Nicola McGrath said: “The basic idea behind ‘The Green Chef’ food recycling scheme is to quickly and efficiently separate out compostable and recyclable waste and cut the amount of food being sent to landfill. Under ‘normal’ waste disposal, food waste would ordinarily be mixed in with non-recyclables and directed to landfill, producing the potent greenhouse gas methane. Our scheme directs all the food waste from participating restaurants straight to recycling.”

Restaurants wishing to become part of ‘The Green Chef’ revolution can get further information by contacting Fresh Start on 0808 178 1966 or visiting www.fswaste.co.uk/food-recycling

Bob ‘bobs’ down to the Reds for his Fresh Start prize

Last month, we ran a competition to encourage all our customers who weren’t already using the convenience of Direct Debit to sign up for it, and last Tuesday, Fresh Start’s Sales Coordinator Anita Perrin invited delighted winner Bob Murdoch and his wife Jane down to Salford City Reds to present him with his prize of a 32” flat screen TV.

Anita said: “Our customers mean everything to us, so we’re always really pleased to meet our customers face to face, especially when we’re presenting a great prize like this.”

The challenge continues...

Another set of lucky Salford City Reds fans took on the challenge of our Bin It to Win It Game on Friday against Leeds.

Here’s a few of the action shots from the nite.

A special thanks for those who took part, Adrian Holland, Lee Hall, Michelle Macklam and the Reds Mascot Ignito.

Pupils give rubbish a Fresh Start

There’s more than meets the eye to these clever constructions by some Salford school children! The Transformers had nothing on the children of St. Andrew’s CE Primary School, Boothstown, when inventive youngsters took the opportunity to turn their rubbish into something exciting and new in a recycling awareness competition sponsored by local recycling business Fresh Start Waste Services.

Pupils came up with such creative ideas as a bag made from old crisp packets, a space shuttle, a rocket constructed with tin cans and a princess castle. The overall winner of the Fresh Start School Challenge was Emily Clay (Nursery - age 4).

The winners received Disney vouchers, sponsored by Fresh Start. Teacher Miss Gemma Scowcroft said: “The pupils had a lot of fun building their recycled pieces, which will also contribute to the national Eco-Schools Award Initiative that we are taking part in.”

The fun competition had a more serious intent however. St. Andrew’s is helping Fresh Start pilot an eco- scheme that the company hopes to roll out in schools across Salford and further afield. With a portion of the school grounds now designated as a recycling centre, complete with Fresh Start recycling bins, pupils will be encouraged to recycle as part of their everyday school lives.

More contestants attempt our Bin It to Win It game

Our second Bin It to Win IT competition took place on Friday 17th of June, at Salford City Reds game against the Castleford Tigers.

This time, five prize draw winners were challenged with the task of trying to land a rugby ball into one of our bins, during the half time interval at the game.

After a number of attempts, some participants were just inches away from walking away with the cash, but sadly, no one scooped the £100.00 prize that was on offer.

Anita Perrin, Sales Co-ordinator at Fresh Start commented, “There were some fantastic attempts, one in particular hitting the rim of the bin.” She added, “I really thought we were going to have another winner, like we did at the Warrington game.”

With plans to run another Bin It To Win in game over the next few months, why not try and be in with a chance. Email your name and contact details to info@fswaste.co.uk and we’ll keep you posted with the details.

Many thanks to the contestants - Paul Earl, Jez Riley, Karen Rosevere, Andy Vickers, Wendy Griffith and Rob Wilson.

Salford City Reds Supporter Wins £100 in our Bin It to Win It Competition

One lucky man won £100 at Salford City Reds’ Good Friday game against the Warrington Wolves, after taking part in Fresh Start’s half time competition ‘Bin It to Win It.’

Dave Collinge (Third from right)- The Winner

Dave Collinge (third from the right in the main image), of Eccles, Salford was one of three contestants, who took part in the game, in an attempt to kick and land a rugby ball in one of our bins.

Perfectly binning the ball to win the cash prize, Dave commented, “As an avid Salford City Reds fan it was great to go on the pitch at half time and see if I could win the cash.” He added that, “I didn’t think I was going to win - but I did.” Congratulations Dave!

Fresh Start would like to also thank Salford City Reds for their help organising the competition on the day and after the competitions huge success we will be looking to continue it at a number of other games. Look out for the Bin it to Win It competition at forthcoming games at the Willows.

Waste management firm deliver some ‘freshtive’ cheer to children’s hospice

Astley-based waste management company Fresh Start Waste Services are hoping to spread a bit of festive cheer this Christmas, after the company and members of staff donated gifts to Francis House Children’s Hospice.

Has he bin yet?

The presents were collected from Fresh Start Waste Services’ depot and delivered directly to the Hospice by none other than Santa Claus himself, just in time for Christmas.

Nicola McGrath, Director at Fresh Start Waste Services, said, “Francis House is a charity that’s very close to our hearts. Everyone at Fresh Start wanted to do something special this Christmas, which can be a particularly difficult time of year for the children and their families.”

As one of Manchester’s leading waste management companies -- who provide waste collection, management and recycling services to the trade, industrial and commercial sectors -- Fresh Start were keen to get involved with their local charity.

Nicola continues, “We hope that this is just the beginning of our work with Francis House, with more fundraising events planned throughout the year.”

‘Fresh’ new look for Fresh Start Waste Services

Fresh Start Waste Services are proud to unveil their ‘fresh’ new look after receiving a major revamp.

‘Fresh’ new look for Fresh Start Waste Services

‘Fresh’ new look for Fresh Start Waste Services.

The new brand identity, which was launched recently, intends to highlight our innovative approach to waste management.

Nicola McGrath, Director at Fresh Start Waste Services, said, “As a company, we like to think ‘outside the bin’ when it comes to waste management. So it was decided that a brand new website and corporate identity was required to reinforce our position as an innovative, friendly company.”

As well as a brand new website, we also unveiled new vehicle livery, company stationery and marketing materials such as brochures and direct mail shots. At the heart of these new materials is our iconic orange waste container, which can be seen on high streets throughout Manchester.

As a rapidly-growing firm, whose aim is to recycle more and make a positive change for our future, we also plan to develop a £500,000, state-of-the-art recycling centre as part of our investment strategy.

McGrath continued, “The company has experienced tremendous growth over the last three years. In order for us to continue developing and improve not only our services but also our recycling capabilities, the addition of a larger site is imperative.”

Our new brand identity was carried out by Manchester-based marketing agency K2L.

Fresh Start Waste Services waste no time acquiring new site

Fresh Start Waste Services have recently acquired an additional operating facility in Swinton, Manchester.

As part of the company’s investment strategy, the Manchester based Waste Recycling company now plans to develop the 0.9 acre site, with 6,000 sq ft of internal operating space into a state of the art, modern recycling centre.

Investing over £500,000 in the new development, Fresh Start Director, Nicola McGrath stated that, “The Company has experienced tremendous growth since its conception, just over three years ago. In order for us to continue to develop and improve not only our services but also our recycling capabilities, the addition of a larger site has become imperative.”

Processing a range of recyclable materials, the new site will not only allow Fresh to manage the waste segregation process more efficiently, increasing the amount of waste that they can recycle, but will also create a number of employment opportunities within the area.

Nicola commented, “We will shortly be recruiting to build upon our waste management team. As a proactive, fresh thinking business we believe that having the right team members is the driving force behind the company’s success.”

Operating throughout the Northwest, with a growing number of waste management contracts for a spectrum of commercial businesses, as well as many schools and other public sector buildings, Fresh Start are now keen to begin the development work required on their new site.

With work anticipated to start later next month, the acquired site is looking to be transformed, modernised and ready for business by October of this year.
